My daughter Karen studied with Ms. Yumie for approximately six years, from the age of three and a half until she was nine.
It feels almost presumptuous for me to try to describe Ms. Yumie’s excellence, but if I were to express it in one phrase,
I would say it is her unwavering commitment to continuously seeking better teaching methods, driven by a sincere and tireless desire to improve.
Over those six years, I am deeply grateful for the many creative and thoughtful approaches she explored in teaching my daughter.
She always worked with great dedication, carefully understanding exactly what Karen needed at each stage,
and selecting repertoire and learning materials accordingly.
The results of this can clearly be seen in her development today.
Ms. Yumie valued communication not only with her students, but also with parents.
Karen had been training in gymnastics since the age of three, often practicing 12 to 16 hours per week.
During times when this made it difficult for her to find enough time to practice piano and she felt stuck,
Ms. Yumie provided precise advice and highly effective practice strategies.
Both my husband and I truly enjoyed our conversations with Ms. Yumie during lessons,
and thanks to her, our entire family rediscovered the joy of music.
Another wonderful aspect of YUMIE PIANO STUDIO is the quality and variety of instruments available.
Students had access to a Boston grand piano, a Yamaha (YU5), as well as a harpsichord and synthesizer,
creating an environment where they could learn in a comprehensive and engaging way, tailored to each piece of music.
In particular, having the opportunity to play Bach on a harpsichord was an invaluable experience.
Additionally, Ms. Yumie generously invested in high-quality recording equipment and systems,
allowing many performances to be recorded and shared on YouTube.
These recordings, including those of other students, have become priceless treasures for our family.
After Ms. Yumie moved to Portland in October, Karen began studying with another teacher.
At her first evaluation, the teacher commented:
“She has a strong sense of rhythm and solid reading skills. It is clear that she has studied music theory well.
Her phrasing is natural, and she plays with flexible arms and hands, free of unnecessary tension.
Most importantly, she is trying to express something she feels within herself through the piano.
It is very clear that she had an excellent teacher during her foundational years.”
The guidance Ms. Yumie provided from the time Karen was three—
helping her learn to express something through the piano,
and to build a solid and correct foundation—continues to support her today.
Karen herself often says,
“Miss Yumie always listened to my ideas.”
She remembers being asked questions like, “What do you feel?” and “What do you see?”
At school, she actively participates in extracurricular activities such as orchestra, musicals, chess club, and the academic team.
The ability to think, feel, and express herself—cultivated through music from such a young age—
continues to influence every aspect of her life.
Thanks to meeting Ms. Yumie, Karen was able to spend a truly enriched childhood,
and I strongly feel that this has become the foundation of both her musicality and her proactive spirit.
Finally, I would like to share a comment from the judges at a recent Bach competition in Lexington that Karen participated in:
“Excellent performance. Your phrasing and interpretation were quite beautiful...
You have a strong technique...”
Of course, she still has many areas to improve,
but being recognized for her “expressiveness supported by solid technique”
was a great encouragement for her.
Ms. Yumie always taught with what felt like not just 100%, but 120% dedication—
to the point that we sometimes worried about her well-being (in a lighthearted way!).
Although there is now physical distance between our families since her move to Portland,
we truly hope to continue cherishing this connection through music
and to maintain our relationship for years to come.
Sincerely,
Mayumi Matsui
